A quarter of all fashion retail orders are returned. The reason hasn't changed in a decade: wrong size or looked different than expected. If you're evaluating VTO in 2026 — here's the guide we wish we'd had when we started.

Частина 01

Three Types of Virtual Try-On (and Why They're Not Interchangeable)

Most comparisons categorize VTO by features: AR, AI, 3D. That's the wrong axis. What matters is the architectural approach — each solves a different problem and breaks on different products.

AR overlay — the camera tracks specific points on the face or hand and renders a digital object in real time. Works for Warby Parker glasses, Sephora lipstick. Not for clothing: fabric isn't rigid, the body isn't a fixed reference.

AI fit prediction — no visualization at all. The system recommends a size by comparing body geometry to the product's size chart. Solves sizing but doesn't answer "how will this look on me?"

Generative AI try-on — generates a new photo of the shopper wearing the item using multiple AI models. The result is photorealistic: fabric drapes correctly, shadows fall right. Pre-2023 this was research-grade; in 2026 it's production-grade with generation under 5 seconds.

When a vendor pitches "AR try-on for clothing" — ask what's really under the hood. If it's not generative AI, the demo won't look like what your shoppers will actually see.

Technology by Category

Universal VTO doesn't exist. When evaluating vendors — ask for a demo of your category on your SKUs, not their showcase catalog.

Категорія Правильний підхід Чому
Clothing (tops, dresses, outerwear) Generative AI try-on Fabric drapes, stretches, folds. Overlays look like stickers.
Footwear AI foot scan + size prediction Size mismatch hurts conversion more than lack of visualization.
Eyewear AR overlay with face tracking Facial landmarks are stable, frames are rigid objects.
Jewelry, watches AR overlay with hand/wrist tracking Small scale, precise placement is critical.
Cosmetics (lipstick, eyeshadow) AR color overlay Preview of texture and shade, not fit.

Metrics That Matter (and One Nobody Talks About)

The widely-cited "conversion lift" is engagement-conditional lift. A shopper who opened the VTO widget is already more intent-rich than one who didn't. Comparing "VTO users vs non-users" conflates tool effect with self-selection.

Honest measurement: controlled cohorts. Two identical traffic segments — one with VTO available, one without. If the vendor doesn't show A/B results, assume the real uplift is 30–50% of the headline number.

Return rate is the cleanest metric. Up to 40% reduction on AR-activated SKUs. No self-selection bias. Measure year-over-year, not month-over-month — returns are seasonal.

"For the first few months with each client, we ran GA4 and our own event pipeline in parallel. The numbers differed by roughly 2x. That's when we stopped trusting third-party analytics inside iframes."

10 Questions to Ask Any VTO Vendor

Vendor evaluation drowns in feature list comparisons. These ten questions separate serious vendors from ones you'll regret signing with. If a vendor dodges three or more — skip them.

Чеклист оцінки VTO-вендора
  • Can you show my SKU in my category within 48 hours?
  • What production references do you have on my ecommerce platform?
  • Do you have your own analytics backend, or do you rely on GA4?
  • Can I export session-level event data?
  • Who owns the generated try-on images?
  • What happens to my catalog when the contract ends?
  • What's the TCO range across your client base?
  • How long does integration take from signing to live?
  • Is there rollover on unused generations? What's the overage price?
  • Can you provide a reference contact already live on my platform?

Pitfalls Vendors Won't Tell You Before Signing

Catalog photo quality is 80% of the result. Generative VTO needs full-body shots, clean background, standardized pose, even lighting. Audit a sample of 50 SKUs before you start evaluating vendors.

Not every SKU should go live. 10–30% of any catalog renders poorly: puffer jackets, technical fabrics, unusual shapes. Showing a bad try-on is worse than showing nothing. You need product eligibility logic — rules that determine where to show the "Try On" button.

Plan your quota. A viral moment or flash sale can consume a monthly package in hours. Three safeguards: alerts at 80–90% usage, rollover of unused generations (Tryora: 80%), transparent overage pricing before you sign.

The Deployment Myth — It Doesn't Take Months

The industry answer to "how long does VTO deployment take" is 8–12 weeks. That's not true. It was true five years ago, and nobody updated the answer.

The VTO integration itself is not the bottleneck. Merchant internal processes sometimes are. That distinction matters: it shows where to focus.

The Google Factor — Shopper Expectations Are Already Shifting

In July 2025, Google rolled out generative AI try-on across Google Search, Images, and Shopping. By April 2026 — six countries: US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Japan. In December 2025 they removed the last barrier — a selfie is now enough instead of a full-body photo.

VTO listings in Google Search get 60% more high-quality views than standard listings. If a competitor's SKU is in Google try-on and yours isn't — they get more clicks from the same search.

Key insight: the work you do to become VTO-ready on your own PDP is the same work that qualifies your catalog for Google try-on. These are not competing investments.

The strategic question has flipped. Before: "will VTO move my metrics?" Now: "can my product pages afford not to have it when shoppers expect it?"

Five Things to Take Away

  • Match technology to category. Clothing needs generative AI. Eyewear needs AR. Don't let one vendor convince you they do both equally well.
  • Measure with controlled cohorts, not headline numbers. Honest conversion uplift is usually 30–50% of the cited number — and that's still meaningful.
  • Your analytics are probably wrong. If the vendor uses GA4, assume your VTO data is undercounted by 2x.
  • Ask about TCO, not the license fee. Asset preparation and integration dominate the real cost.
  • Deployment doesn't take months. If a vendor says it does — ask what specifically takes that long.
